Governor’s Ham Breakfast is a Win for State Fair Foundation
August 17, 2012, Sedalia, MO – More than 1,200 people attended the 60th Annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast yesterday, Aug. 16, in the Director’s Tent on the fairgrounds in Sedalia.
Gov. Jay Nixon addressed the guests, which included Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler, several state and local elected officials, Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe, the State Fair Commission and many other agriculture leaders and State Fair supporters.
Auctioneer Dick Hutchison led the morning’s sale, which included the State Fair champion hams and bacon, and a commemorative belt buckle, raising a total of $22,700. Proceeds from the auction and breakfast will support Missouri State Fair projects, including youth scholarships.
The auction began with the Grand Champion Ham exhibited by Quynten Cary of California. The ham was purchased by Murphy Brothers Exposition & Ditzfeld Transfer, Inc. for $10,000 and was donated to the Missouri 4-H Foundation.
The Reserve Grand Champion Ham exhibited by Wyatt Stafford of Versailles, went to Starline Brass for $3,500 and was then donated to Missouri FFA. Starline Brass also purchased the Grand Champion Bacon exhibited by Jennifer Witthaus of Jonesburg, for $6,000 and then donated it to the Missouri 4-H Foundation. Kansas City Power and Light was the buyer of the commemorative belt buckle that sold for $3,200.
A variety of events are still scheduled for the Missouri State Fair, including tonight’s Pepsi Grandstand show at 7:30 p.m., featuring Larry the Cable Guy and Reno Collier. Hank Williams Jr.’s Taking Back the Country tour with special guest star George Thorogood and the Destroyers will be Saturday, Aug. 18 in the grandstand, followed by Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models, ASCS Warrior Region 360 Sprints and Modifieds Sunday, Aug. 19.
