The Missouri State Fair is the premier showcase for Missouri agriculture. Missouri’s farm families are the backbone of the agriculture industry. For the past 59 years, the Fair has celebrated the hard work of these families on Farm Family Day. Each county in the state can recognize a family that is actively involved in agriculture and their community. This year Farm Family Day will be held on Monday, Aug. 14. In celebration of their selection as their county’s Farm Family of the Year, families are provided a dinner in the Director’s Tent and a plaque to recognize their hard work. Farm Family Day is sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau, University of Missouri Extension, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Missouri State Fair, and University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.
Last year, my family was fortunate enough to be selected to represent our county during Farm Family Day. We reside on a small farm in St. Charles County where we raise registered Boer goats. My siblings and I are very active in 4-H. All three of us show livestock and my sister and I have both served on the Missouri State 4-H Council.
Pictured above is my family and I last year at the display sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension to recognize the farm families. The exhibit is west of the Historic Administration Building; make sure to check it out during the Fair!
This recognition was very much appreciated by my family, as well as the many other families who received their award that evening. It is a great chance to catch up with friends from across the state, as well as spend time as a family at the Missouri State Fair.
Make sure to check out all the families being honored this year. The full list of 2017 Farm Families can be viewed on the State Fair Website. If you visit the Fair on Farm Family Day, Monday, Aug. 14, be sure to look for the farm families in attendance. They will be wearing green ribbons. Take a second and thank them for their support of Missouri agriculture. They will appreciate it!
