Missouri State Fair Equine Competitions Start Tursday

The Missouri State Fair competition schedule is officially underway this Thursday, July 26, beginning with the 4-H and FFA Horse Show, followed by the prestigious Society Horse Show, Tuesday, July 31. These events are open to the public at no charge.

Show classes for 4-H and FFA youth will be held July 26-29, with events taking place in the Mathewson Exhibition Center, Donnelly Arena and Coliseum. Orscheln Farm and Home is the sponsor of the t-shirts worn by the youth during these shows and during the 11-day Fair.

Society Horse Show events will be held July 31 and Aug 1-4. All events will be held in the Mathewson Exhibition Center.

Equine competitions continue throughout the 11-day Fair. The Miniature Mule Show will take place in the MFA Arena at 6 pm, Aug 10. Later that evening, the Draft Mule Show will start at 7 pm in the Coliseum. The following day, Aug 11, will be a full day of mule shows, starting with the Open Mule Classes at 8 am and ending with the Jumping Mules and Mule Game Classes at 6:30 pm. All mule shows on Aug. 11 will be held in the Mathewson Exhibition Center.

Donkeys show at the Fair for one day, Aug 12, beginning with Jacks and Jennets at 8 am in the MFA Arena. The Miniature Donkey Show will begin immediately following.

The Mathewson Exhibition Center will host the Draft Horse Shows starting Aug 15, with the Draft Horse Sled pull at 5 pm on Aug 15; the Gypsy Horse Show at 9 am on Aug 16 and 17; Belgian, Percheron, and Clydesdale Shows at 8 am on Aug 18; and the Pony Pull at 1 pm on Aug 18. The always-popular Draft Horse Hitches, title sponsored by Toyota, will take place at 6 pm on Aug 17 and 18. Draft Hitches will close the Fair at 1 pm on Aug 19 and will include the 8-horse hitch class.

The Governor’s Ham Breakfast

On Thursday, Aug 16, the 66th Annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast will take place on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. The Breakfast is scheduled to kick-off at 8 am with the meal and program in the Director’s Tent located on the Fairgrounds.

The Governor’s Ham Breakfast is a traditional gathering of Missouri elected officials, leaders in agriculture and supporters of the Missouri State Fair. Proceeds from the auction of the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Hams, Grand Champion Bacon and Limited Edition Belt Buckle are used by the Missouri State Fair Foundation to pay premiums to winning exhibitors and to provide scholarships for youth in agriculture. Tickets for the Breakfast are on sale now. It is encouraged to buy tickets in advance as seating is limited for the day of the event.

Throwback Thursday Scavenger Hunt

Thursday, Aug 16 is Throwback Thursday, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation. This day will feature $5 gate admission for ages 13+ and children 12 & under get in free. Select vendors and concessions will have Throwback specials featured at their stands throughout the day.

The Throwback Thursday Scavenger Hunt, sponsored by Bimbo Bakeries USA, is back again for another year. Scavenger Hunt lists can be picked up at any Fair information booth on Aug 16. The Scavenger Hunt must be completed and returned to the Touchstone Energy Stage by 6 pm to be entered into a drawing to win 4 admission and carnival tickets for the 2018 Missouri State Fair. Individuals must be present to win the tickets.
