Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steer

(SEDALIA, Mo.) – Gage Baker, son of Rhad and Leah Baker, is the exhibitor of the 2019 Grand Champion Market Steer at the Missouri State Fair. Gage is from Fulton, and is a member of the Rising Sun 4-H Club. Gage’s prize-winning Crossbred market steer weighed 1325 pounds.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer honor went to Mikaela Rojas of New Boston. She is the daughter of Bryon and Alicia Rojas and is a member of the Shelby/ Linn County 4-H Club. Mikaela’s Crossbred market steer weighed 1350 pounds.

On Aug. 17, both Gage and Mikaela will sell their market steers in two of 12 lots offered in the Missouri State Fair Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the annual sale benefit both the winning exhibitors and the Missouri State Fair Youth in Agriculture (YIA) Scholarship Program.

Many livestock exhibitors will work toward earning a place in the ring at the time-honored Sale of Champions Auction. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Steers, Barrows, Lambs, Meat Goats, Pens of Chickens and Pens of Rabbits will be featured in the auction, which will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, in the Lowell Mohler Assembly Hall. The entire auction will be broadcast live by KMMO radio online; and by KRLI radio online and on their FM station 103.9FM; on KMZU radio online and live updates on their FM station 100.7FM. The auction will also be live on the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Facebook page.

Through the generous support of YIA sponsors and the Missouri State Fair Foundation, the Missouri State Fair is able to award scholarships each year to Missouri youth. Last year, forty $1,500 scholarships, one supreme $2,500 scholarship, sponsored by Sydenstricker John Deere/Sydenstricker Genetics, and one $5,000 platinum scholarship offered by YIA supporters were awarded to youth across Missouri. Since 1992, the YIA committee has awarded 648 scholarships totaling $684,000.

Highlights for Thursday, Aug 15, Governor’s, Legislators’ & Judges Day and Throwback Thursday

Come Home for the 67th  Missouri State Fair Governor’s Ham Breakfast, Thursday, Aug. 15. This traditional gathering kicks off Governor’s, Legislators’, and Judges’ Day at the Fair with the Breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.

Meal tickets are sold out. Limited standing room only $10 rickets that do not include the meal will be available for purchase the morning of the event at the ticket office tent, just outside the Director’s Tent.

The Governor’s Ham Breakfast brings together Missouri elected officials, leaders in agriculture and supporters of the Missouri State Fair from all across the state. The auction of the Grand and Reserve Champion Hams, Grand Champion Bacon and Limited Edition Commemorative Belt Buckle will raise funds to pay premiums to winning exhibitors and provide scholarships for youth in agriculture.

Thursday, Aug. 15 is also Throwback Thursday, sponsored by Buckle Up Phone Down. Gate admission is $5 for all fairgoers age 13 and over and children 12 and under are admitted free. Throwback specials will be offered at select concessions and vendors on the grounds.

Some highlights of the day include:

Missouri’s First Lady’s Pie Contest, sponsored by Starline Brass and Missouri Grown, starting at 10 a.m. in the Home Economics Building.

It Can Wait VR Experience, sponsored by AT&T, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the MoDOT Expo Center.

Missouri Travel Alliance’s Tourism Trade Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lowell Mohler Assembly Hall. The trade show will showcase the best communities across the state. Enjoy free Missouri Wine and Missouri Craft Beer Tasting from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Wristbands for the tasting will be available at 11 a.m. at MTA’s Booth in the Assembly Hall, while supplies last.

Garden Tractor and Mini Rod & Truck Pull at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the State Fair Arena, sponsored by Husqvarna; free admission (no ticket required).

Wine 101 Class, sponsored by Missouri Wines, in the Wine Tent at noon and 2 p.m.

Great free grounds entertainment including ragtime artist Ethan Leinwand on the Ditzfeld Stage. Platinum Rock Legends will rock the Budweiser Stage at 9 p.m. Enjoy family-friendly entertainment through the day at the Touchstone Energy Stage and the Kids Stage, sponsored by McDonald’s.

Livestock shows and competitive exhibit contests for dairy cattle, Gypsy horse and rabbits, swine showmanship and horticulture.

Corn Dog Eating Contest, sponsored by Roger Westmoreland Concessions, Inc. and McKinney Food Services, at 6 p.m. on the Touchstone Energy Stage. The first 10 people to register will compete in the contest and the next two will be alternates. Register between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Administrative Office located adjacent to the Mathewson Exhibition Center on the fairgrounds. The winner will receive FOUR admission tickets and FOUR Grandstand tickets to their concert of choice at the 2020 Missouri State Fair!

Sacred Heart Church Catholic Mass at 6 p.m. in the Dr. Taylor Woods Youth Center Sales Arena to celebrate “The Assumption of Mary.”

NEW! Military Flag Retreat Ceremony honoring Marvin Neal, sponsored by Capital Materials, Starline Brass and Retrieving Freedom, Inc., at 6 p.m. by the flagpole located near the Highway Patrol Office.
