You can work at the Fair! The Missouri State Fair hires hundreds of adults and young people each year to play important roles in helping Missouri residents and tourist enjoy summer fun.

Fair time applications will be available from the Personnel Office around June 2020. Please check back then for more information.

Summer Internships

Who should apply?
College students pursuing a major in communications, public relations, agriculture, advertising or journalism, looking for real-life experiences. Ideal candidates are passionate about agriculture and creative communications, detailed-oriented, thrive under pressure and find the opportunity in every challenge!

Deadline:
Application & required materials must be submitted by December 31, 2019.

Qualified applicants will be asked to participate in an interview on the fairgrounds and complete a writing and design exercise, as well as submit a portfolio of work.

Marketing Internship

Pay and benefits:
– Entry level position pays minimum wage, currently $8.60 per hour.
– Average of 40 hours a week & 40+ hours a week during the 11-day Fair.
– The internship will begin May 18, 2020 and end August 23, 2020.
– Limited meals may be provided during the 11-day Fair
– Free housing can be included on the Fairgrounds, which consists of one bedroom and bathroom.

What you’ll be doing:
– Media relations
– Special event & contest planning/execution
– Public relations activities including extensive eblast & press release writing
– Social media administration
– Corresponding with a variety & types of people via telephone, email and direct mail
– Agriculture education opportunities
– Promotional materials design & distribution
– General office work & other duties as assigned

Youth in Agriculture Internship

Pay and benefits:
– Entry level position pays $1,000.
– Average 40+ hours a week during the 11-day Fair.
– The internship will begin August 10, 2020 and end August 23, 2020.
– Lodging in the Missouri State Fair Dormitory available.

What you’ll be doing:
– Attend committee meeting held early summer 2020.
– Interview Grand and Reserve Grand Champion winners.
– Public relation activities including press release writing.
– Schedule interviews with local media and exhibitors.
– Assist exhibitors with calls to hometown supporters.
– Keep an accurate accounting of all hometown support pledge and/or paid.
– Assist with youth dance and coordinating the Sale of Champions.
– Develop the Sale of Champions program.
– Assist in writing script for auctioneer & master of ceremonies.
– General office work & other duties as assigned.

Home Economics Superintendent

Reports To:

Job Summary:
Responsible for the oversight of the Fair’s Home Economics Competitions and Building

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
– Meet with the State Fair Director and relevant State Fair staff to prepare a plan of action and acquire approval for future plans.
– Review Premium Guide and make necessary changes to rules and classes offered for Household Arts, Preservation and Foods categories.
– Review ribbon, special awards and plaque orders and make necessary changes.
– Obtain contributions and sponsorships for classes.
– Recommend and secure judges for competitions.
– Secure needed personnel to carry out essential functions of department.
– Prepare list of various needs, supplies and repairs for the function of the Home Economics Building during the Fair.
– Adhere to budgetary guidelines set forth by the State Fair Director.
– Oversee the Home Economics Building Consumer Showcase Stage.
– Coordinate and execute a plan to for creative display methods in the Home Economics Building.
– Assist Entry supervisor by checking entries and helping to solve entry issues as they occur.
– Request and distribute admission and marketing credentials for department personnel.
– See that shows results are sent to the Entry Supervisor in a timely manner, according to a timeline determined by the Entry Supervisor.
– Take care of any and all problems that arise during the Fair in his/her department by following rules and regulations set forth by the Fair; report any problems to the State Fair Director.
– Perform duties in a safe, competent and businesslike manner.
– Completes job duties/responsibilities and tasks within established timelines/time frames.
– Be courteous and respectful toward fairgoers, exhibitors, Fair staff and any other persons in the workplace.
– Be knowledgeable of Fair policies and procedures as outlined in the Premium Guide, and enforce participant, exhibitor, employee and judge compliance.  
– Stay up-to-date on trends in related areas, with an eye for including those trends in competition offerings for department.
– Assist Entry Department with the creation of a Cookbook of award-winning recipes.
– Return all unused supplies, credentials and awards to the appropriate Fair staff at the end of each Fair.

Qualifications
– Background in home economics-related fields (textile, culinary, craft, etc.) preferred.
– Creative mind – from competitions to display methods.
– Ability to work flexible hours all 11 days of the annual Missouri State Fair for extended shifts.
– Ability to work summer hours before the Fair to prepare for the Fair in August.
– Ability to work on a diverse team and with fairgoers of all ages.
– Excellent communication skills.
– Ability to work with limited instruction/supervision.
– Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs (Word and Excel).
