The final weekend of the Missouri State Fair is packed full of professional music. Jake Owen’s Days of Gold Tour will top off the country music concert series in the Pepsi Grandstand tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 15. The concert will include Jake Owen and the Eli Young Band, with special guest The Cadillac Three, performing at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25/$30/$35/$45 and can be purchased at the Fair’s Box Office.

Alexandra Gast, daughter of Bryan Gast and Michelle Branham, is the exhibitor of the 2014 Grand Champion Pen of Rabbits at the Missouri State Fair. Alexandra is from Nevada, and a member of the Country Clovers 4-H Club. Alexandra’s prize-winning Californian rabbits weighed an average of 4.66 pounds.
Farm Family Day Celebrates 56 Years

The 56th Annual Farm Family Day was celebrated Monday, Aug. 11 at the Missouri State Fair. Farm families from nearly every Missouri county were represented this day, which culminated with a dinner for them at the Director’s Tent. Local Farm Bureau Boards and County Extension Councils selected a family to receive the honors prior to the State Fair.

Spencer Scotten, son of Shannon and Krista Scotten, is the exhibitor of the 2014 Grand Champion Meat Goat at the Missouri State Fair. Spencer is from Nevada, and a member of the Nevada FFA Chapter. Spencer’s prize-winning Boer goat weighed 95 pounds.

Tuesday, visitors to the Missouri State Fair can save up to half on gate admission with food donations. The fourth annual food drive is being sponsored again this year by Midwest and St. Louis Ford Dealers and Missouri Farmers Care. The gate special on the fairgrounds Wednesday will be a $2 savings on senior and adult tickets with a Sedalia Democrat front page banner advertisement.

Miss Hanna Keene from Warrenton was named the 2014 Missouri State Fair Queen in a ceremony held yesterday, Aug. 8. Miss Keene received the highest score of 58 contestants vying for the title in the competition held at 3 p.m. in the Mathewson Exhibition Center. Miss Keene will reign over the remaining State Fair events and be an ambassador for the State Fair and Missouri agriculture throughout the coming year. Winning entries have also been announced in the Fine Arts Department and Opening Day Parade.

Trey Porter, son of Doug and Melanie Porter, is the exhibitor of the 2014 Grand Champion Market Barrow at the Missouri State Fair. Trey is from California, and a member of the Shamrock 4-H Club. Trey’s prize-winning Crossbred barrow weighed 268 pounds.

Simeon Buie, son of Dan and Rebecca Buie, is the exhibitor of the 2014 Grand Champion Pen of Chickens at the Missouri State Fair. Simeon is a member of the Work to Win 4-H Club in Marshall. Simeon’s prize-winning chickens weighed an average of 5.95 pounds.

The 2014 Missouri State Fair announced today two outstanding female agriculturalists, selected in a second annual contest sponsored by Monsanto. Tammy Bartholomew of Archie received the contest title of Missouri Woman in Agriculture, and Ashlyn Richardson of Lincoln received the title of Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star. Each winner will receive a $1,000 cash donation from Monsanto, for a non-profit organization of her choice.

Tickets to the Missouri State Fair Pepsi Grandstand concerts, State Fair Arena events and Governor’s Ham Breakfast go on sale today through Ticketmaster, followed by the opening of the Box Office at noon Wednesday, June 18, according to Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. The Box Office, also selling $6 advanced gate admission tickets, is located on the fairgrounds in Sedalia. The hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through Aug. 1, expanding to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 4-6 and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily during the Fair Aug. 7-17.

A new event day, Celebrate Kids in Agriculture Saturday, Aug. 16, will top the list of exciting new promotions offered at the 2014 Missouri State Fair. Activities this day will be coordinated by the Missouri State Fair and Missouri Department of Agriculture, and sponsored by Missouri Department of Conservation. The day will acknowledge youth currently involved in Missouri’s agriculture industry, and help raise awareness of and encourage an interest in agriculture among Missouri youth. Plans this day will include free gate admission for children ages 12 years of age and younger, free old-fashioned harvest games and new contests in two competitive exhibit categories. The event day will be the culmination of the 2014 Fair’s marketing campaign, which includes a heightened emphasis on celebrating youth.

The Feb. 1 deadline is approaching for high school seniors interested in applying for a Missouri State Fair Youth in Agriculture Scholarship. Thirty $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the Youth in Agriculture committee, seven $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the Missouri State Fair Foundation and one $2,500 supreme scholarship sponsored by Sydenstricker John Deere of Missouri/Sydenstricker Angus Genetics, are being awarded to qualified applicants pursuing higher education degrees in the field of agriculture.

Attendance trending upward for Missouri State Fair

Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe announced today an attendance of 366,218 at this year’s 11 day event. The figure reflects an increase of more than three percent from last year, and an upward trend in attendance since Wolfe assumed his position in 2009. This positive direction has had a ripple effect on the Fair’s revenue generating streams, including the campground and carnival operations, helping to put the State Fair on a more solid financial footing.
