The Missouri State Fair Youth in Agriculture scholarship application, for Missouri High School seniors graduating in 2014, is now available online at www.mostatefair.com/youth-in-agriculture. Applications should be submitted to the Missouri State Fair and must be postmarked by February 1, 2014.

Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe announced today an attendance of 366,218 at this year’s 11 day event. The figure reflects an increase of more than three percent from last year, and an upward trend in attendance since Wolfe assumed his position in 2009. This positive direction has had a ripple effect on the Fair’s revenue generating streams, including the campground and carnival operations, helping to put the State Fair on a more solid financial footing.

As the curtain closed on the 2013 Missouri State Fair and exhibitors picked up their entries, one particular exhibitor sparked a special interest among the State Fair staff. Edward Castle, age 95 of Carrollton, drove himself to the fairgrounds one last time this year, on Aug. 18, to claim his award-winning needlepoint projects, which had been on display throughout the State Fair in the Home Economics Building.

The 55th Annual Farm Family Day Dinner was held yesterday, Monday, Aug. 12, in the Director’s Tent on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Outstanding farm families from 105 counties in Missouri were recognized at the dinner and presented with a plaque, sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau. The families were selected by local Farm Bureau Boards and County Extension Councils this summer.

State Fair Takes Action Regarding Events at Rodeo Saturday Night

At its meeting this morning, the Missouri State Fair Commission was given a report by Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe on actions taken as a result of unacceptable behavior during the Missouri Rodeo Cowboys Associations Finals Rodeo this weekend on the fairgrounds.
The Missouri State Fair Commission ratifies the firm action already taken by the Fair director to permanently ban this rodeo clown from ever participating or performing at the Missouri State Fair again.
Furthermore the MRCA must hold all those responsible for this offensive stunt accountable.
In addition, before the Missouri State Fair considers contracting with this association again for future rodeos, they must provide evidence to the director of the Missouri State Fair that they have proof that all officials and subcontractors of the MRCA have successfully participated in sensitivity training.

Miss Warren County Crowned 2013 Missouri State Fair Queen

Ashley Bauer from Warrenton was crowned the 2013 Missouri State Fair Queen in the Friday, Aug. 9 coronation service held in the Mathewson Exhibition Center on the fairgrounds. Miss Bauer will reign over the remaining State Fair events and be an ambassador for the Missouri State Fair and agriculture throughout the coming year. She is Miss Warren County, and is the daughter of Todd and Suzanne Bauer.

The 2013 Missouri State Fair kicked off its celebration with the annual Opening Day Parade, Thursday, Aug. 8, in Sedalia. The 65 entry procession, which began at 6 p.m. along State Fair Boulevard, was led by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, followed by color guards from the Sedalia VFW, Missouri Sons of the American Revolution, and the Smith Cotton JROTC, also of Sedalia. State Fair Director Mark Wolfe, and his wife Julie, traveled the parade route in a horse-drawn carriage.

The 2013 Missouri State Fair has announced two outstanding female agriculturists, selected in a new contest sponsored by Monsanto. Brenda Black of Deepwater received the contest title of Missouri Woman in Agriculture, and Kellar Nelson of Mexico received the title of Missouri Woman in Agriculture Rising Star. For their accomplishment, both women will receive a $1,000 cash donation from Monsanto, which will be presented to the non-profit organizations of their choice in a program held during the Governor’s Ham Breakfast on Thursday,
Aug. 15. On this day, women of all ages will enjoy free gate admission and a plethora of activities specifically planned for them.

The Missouri State Fair will be increasing its efforts to collect canned food this year as it joins in a challenge presented by its industry trade association. Fair Director Mark Wolfe said today that members of the International Association of Fairs and Festivals have been invited to participate in its campaign, Dream Big, which has set an industry-wide goal of collecting 20 million pounds of food at fairs and festivals held in 2013.
