Rules and Regulations
Please read ALL instructions carefully. Entry Fee is: $1 per article/item. For “Protest and Appeal” please refer to the “General Rules” of this premium guide.
If an exhibitor or employee, in an inappropriate and public manner, makes exception to the judging or ruling of the judge, awarding committee, superintendent or any official of the Missouri State Fair, said exhibitor or employee shall be expelled and prohibited from competing for a premium or exhibiting on the grounds until he makes proper apology and is reinstated by order of the Fair Director.
Exhibitors are responsible for their own errors and those of their agents in filling out entry blanks.
Any attempt by an exhibitor, either personally or through an agent, to corrupt the judges or exert undue influence, will subject the offender to expulsion from the grounds and he or she will thereafter be prohibited from exhibiting or other privileges.
- Exhibitors must comply with all general rules and regulations for exhibitors in this premium book.
Violation of these rules may result in any or all of the following:- Withholding or return of payment for the animal or exhibit, premiums and awards.
- Suspension from future exhibiting at the Missouri State Fair for a length of time to be determined by the Missouri State Fair Commission or the Director of the Missouri State Fair on behalf of the Commission. Suspensions can be for any length of time and may be permanent.
- Probationary exhibiting at the Missouri State Fair for a length of time and under such terms and conditions to be determined by the Missouri State Fair Commission or the Director of the Missouri State Fair on behalf of the Commission.
- Assessment of any other penalty determined by the Missouri State Fair Commission or the Director of the Missouri State Fair on behalf of the Commission.
- Exhibitors in this department must be Missouri residents. Proof of residence may be required. Entries need not have been entered or won at a county fair in order to be eligible for competition at the Missouri State Fair.
- It is the goal of the Home Economics Department to provide opportunities for interested individuals of all ages to participate. Some contests, however, may designate “amateur only” or “professional only”.
For this purpose, professional shall be one who currently derives their supportive income from the same skills involved in the competition. Amateur shall be all others. - Prohibited Activities/Items – No barbecue grills allowed (includes charcoal, butane, propane, and woodchip-type grills). These items are prohibited in the interest of safety for all who attend the Fair. Violators will have equipment confiscated. It will be available for pick up the day after the Fair closes at the Highway Patrol Office.
- All articles or products must be the work of the exhibitor.
- When there is only one (1) exhibit in a class, the exhibitor will receive half of the premium money for the placing awarded by the judge.
- The Missouri State Fair does not guarantee premium money, merchandise, prizes or special awards. Because the State Fair Commission is without constitutional or statutory authority to borrow money for its operation, it reserves the right to prorate premium money because of state budget restraints.
- All recipes must be typed or printed on the recipe form in the back of this section or typed using that format and accompany each food entry. Please include name, address, phone number and class number on each recipe.
- Articles must be completed since September 1, 2023 (within the last 3 years) and not previously shown at the Missouri State Fair. Preservation must be canned since 2025 Fair.
- Only ONE entry or exhibit in each numbered class unless stated otherwise.
- Articles entered should be of the style, type and material currently used.
- Entries close in this department and must be received July 21. Late entries will be accepted, with the addition of $10 late fee per exhibitor until 12 noon, July 28.
- All exhibits and contests must be pre-entered. Complete entry form according to 2026 catalog classifications and return before the deadline.
- Complete address and social security number of the exhibitor must be on all entry blanks and sheets in the entry book. Do not enclose entry blank in a package with the exhibits.
- Entry tags will be used as claim checks. Entry tags will be mailed when the completed entry blank is received. Entry tags will be returned to enable tagging before exhibits are brought to the Fair. To expedite matters, please have entry tags and recipe sheets completed before arrival at the Fair. Lower part of entry tag is claim check. If tags are late in arriving, blank tags are available on day of accepting exhibits. Do not fold tags before delivery.
- To simplify entering, judging, and displaying, any articles entered in Household Arts (section A) must be described on entry blank by color, design or description.
- Exhibits requiring more than one item to complete the exhibit must have the section designation, class number, title, and entry number attached to each item. This information must correspond with the official entry tag and will be prepared by the exhibitor. (All entries in the Foods Department and all framed pictures must have the entry tag attached to the exhibit with string. NO TAPE.)
- Jars used for canning must be standard colorless glass jars, sealed with two-piece lacquer lids. Jars with zinc lids will not be accepted. Jellies must be in standard jelly jars. No jelly sealed with paraffin wax will be accepted.
- All canned products and jellies must have tags attached with STRING, NO RUBBER BANDS. Food Preservation will not be opened. All entries in Food Preservation must have, attached to the jar, the method of processing, amount of time processed and at what temperature.
- Exhibits will be received at the Home Economics Building Saturday, August 8, 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 9, 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Exhibits may be brought in or mailed. Exhibitor must have the exhibit entered in the correct class when entering. NO CHANGES of classes will be made by any entry official. If exhibits don’t meet qualifications as specified in the State Fair Premium Guide the exhibit may be disqualified by the judge. Judges decision is final. Times for entry will be strictly enforced. NO late entries will be accepted. Only one (1) entry per class. Contest food will be brought in according to the rules of the corresponding contest. Food items upon entry become the property of the Missouri State Fair. All visible molded food will be thrown away immediately. Due to food safety rules ALL food items will be discarded at the end of the Fair.
- Exhibits sent by mail delivery or United Parcel Service must be addressed to: Home Economics Building, Missouri State Fair, 2503 W. 16th St., Sedalia, MO 65301. Such exhibits will not be accepted after noon, Friday, August 7. Item must be picked up.
Indicate on the back of your entry tag for each item (top section), the following: a) If you will pick your item up personally; or b) If someone else will pick up your item, specify name of individual who will pick it up. NO exhibit(s) will be return mailed to the exhibitor. - If you are not picking up your products, a self-addressed 8×10 inch manila envelope ($5 minimum of stamps) left with the Superintendent will assure your receipt of ribbons and score sheets. Please note: your ribbons will not be returned unless you leave this envelope and stamps.
- Exhibits will remain in place through Sunday, August 23 until 6:00 p.m. They may be picked up from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 23 and 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 24. To assist with release on Sunday evening, we would encourage those people who live within a 25 mile radius of Sedalia to pick up your exhibits on Monday, August 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., if it is possible for you to do so.
Food items upon entry become the property of the Missouri State Fair. All visible molded food will be thrown away immediately. Due to food safety rules ALL food items will be discarded at the end of the Fair.
This is not a requirement, only a suggestion, to help speed up the release of exhibits on Sunday night. Claim checks must be presented. Removal of exhibits from the building must have the approval of one of the superintendents. Persons taking articles without permission and/or by mistake will assume the full responsibility of expense for their return to the rightful owner. Exhibitors and/or persons will be required to check out all articles taken by them. - Any exhibits not picked up by 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 24, 2026, will not be return mailed to the exhibitor. Exhibits may be picked up at the Administrative Offices next to the National Guard Armory, weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; exhibits not picked up in 10 days become property of the Missouri State Fair.
- Exhibits are judged according to merit. Judges will not be required to give an award if, in their opinion, an award is not merited. Judges will have the liberty to disqualify an exhibit for judging if, in their opinion, the exhibitor has not complied with the rules as set forth in this department or exhibit is entered in the wrong class. In all instances, the decision of the judges is final. All premium checks will be mailed.
- All articles will be under the control of the Superintendent and care will be taken to prevent loss or damage, but in no event will the Missouri State Fair or the personnel in charge of this department be responsible for loss or damage that might occur.
- There are specific rules given for the special contests offered. To be eligible, exhibitors will need to follow and adhere to these rules in addition to the foregoing general rules. All contests must be pre-entered.
- If there are a few entries in a class for 2 consecutive years, that class will be eliminated and a new class will be added.
Sweepstakes
- Home Economics Sweepstakes – A rosette and $50 will be awarded to the exhibitor scoring the highest number of points in this department (Sections A, B and C). In case of tie, blue and red ribbons only will be counted. Exhibitor’s age must be on the entry blank.
- Junior Sweepstakes (9-18) – A rosette and $25 will be awarded to the exhibitor scoring the highest number of points in this department (Sections A, B and C). In case of a tie, blue and red ribbons only will be counted. Exhibitor’s age must be on the entry blank.
- Senior Citizens Sweepstakes (60 and over) – A rosette and $25 will be awarded to the exhibitor scoring the highest number of points in this department (Sections A, B and C). Exhibitor’s age must be on the entry blank.

Judging Criteria: All pictures, including framing, should be properly finished, including back. Size of worked picture (counted cross stitch, needle point or embroidery) should be size indicated for class. All pictures and wall hangings must be framed or mounted, have wire or hook to hang and not exceed 24″ x 36″ in size. Tag attached with string. NO TAPE. The rule is each block musts have different scrap materials. They can be of similar colors (Example: Everything Blue) or totally different colors. Your Choice. These are to be Machine quilted. Toys become the property of the Missouri State Fair for distribution to the Sedalia Police Department for children, in Sedalia, MO. Stuffed toys help comfort children during police encounters in traumatic situations. This class is sponsored by McDonald’s.
Rules and Regulations
1. Must use new Polyfil Stuffing.
2. Eyes, nose, hair, etc., to be painted on with fabric paints or embroidered. Nothing may be attached with glue.
3. Up to 24″ tall. - Class 142: Lap of Liberty – Veteran’s Lap Quilt
Help us provide a lap quilt to comfort a veteran in need. Lap quilt can be made from material, crochet, or knitted. Quilt will be lap size not to exceed 40 x 60 inches. Items submitted become the property of the Missouri State Fair for distribution to the many veterans in Missouri nursing homes and veteran’s homes. - Class 143: “Newborns in Need”
Help us help premature and newborn babies who are sick and/or needy. Items can be baby afghans, baby quilts, hats, boots, socks, stuffed toys, sweater sets, etc. Items submitted become the property of the Missouri State Fair to be donated.- First place: $50, Second place: $30, Third place: $20
- Class 144: Quilts of Valor
A Quilt of Valor is to award Service Members and Veterans who have been touched by war. It says “thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving out nation.” Fabric used should be quality, 100% cotton fabric appropriate for adults. Patterns and blocks can be of any design suitable for a patriotic theme. Avoid juvenile, gender or branch specific fabrics, unless recipient is known to you. A Quilt of Valor is to be large enough to cover an average-sized adult, with ideal size approximately 60″x80″. Finished size can be smaller than 55″x65″ and no larger than 72″x90″. The quilt consists of top, batting and backing. It must be machine or hand quilted. Tie quilts will not be accepted. Backings provided to the LongArmy Volunteer must be 8″ wider in width and 8″ longer in length. Use quality, low loft batting such as cotton, cotton blends, polyester or polyester blends. Quilting should be appropriate for the quilt and not overly dense, which can reduce the loft of the quilt. Double fold, or French fold, binding is recommended for durability. Hand stitch or neatly machine stitch binding. A Quilt of Valor must be labeled as such, and include the name of the veteran or service member. Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance is dedicated to exploring, celebrating and preserving unique food traditions and their cultural contexts in the American Midwest. By hosting public events, developing archival resources and generating publications, the Alliance celebrates the distinctiveness of a region that is as varied in tastes and traditions as it is in its geography from the Great Lakes to the Great Plains. Exploring indigenous foods like Wisconsin cranberries and Minnesota walleye, celebrating iconic flavors like the wheat and corn from across the prairies, chronicling cuisines from Native American to early European immigrants to 21st-century newcomers, or highlighting fish boils in small towns and fine dining big cities, the Alliance promotes and chronicles the diversity of the region’s culinary character.

- Entries should be typed (or neat handwriting) on 8-1/2 x 11-inch paper in duplicate. On the back of every history and recipe page submitted, please state contestant’s name, age at time of contest, address, phone number and email address.
- On a separate page(s), please state the recipe. Each entry must be replicable from the recipe submitted. If an ingredient requires a recipe (for example, Jerry’s famous sausage), please include it. A copy of the original recipe (color or black and white). These may be in personal culinary diaries, back of envelopes, notations in books or 3×5 cards. If you have rewritten the original recipe to clarify instructions, please include a copy along with the original recipe that inspired it. If the family favorite recipe was lost and you put effort to recreate it, please note this in your history with some explanation of how it was achieved (or how it was lost).
- On a separate page(s) present the recipe’s history. You may include who passed the recipe down to you, ethnicity (if relevant), number of years the recipe has been in your family and any interesting information about its place in your family’s traditions. - Only one entry/recipe per exhibitor is allowed in each class.
- Contestants must pre-enter by July 28, 2026.
- Pies must be baked at home and delivered to the Home Economics Building (building will open at 9:00 a.m.) no later than 9:45 a.m. on August 20, 2026. Judging will begin at 10:00 a.m.
- This contest is for amateur bakers of all ages. Professional bakers, caterers, certified chefs or individuals whose primary income results from their baking ability are not eligible.
- A clearly typed or printed official Missouri State Fair Recipe Form is required upon delivery of food. Contestants must enter on the official Home Economics Exhibitor’s Entry Form.
- Recipe must be original and not previously published. List all ingredients for both crust and filling in exact measurements and include preparation steps, pan size, temperature, and baking time. Pie must be baked in a standard 9 inch, round aluminum pie pan.
- Pie crust and dessert filling of your choice must be homemade; no pre-manufactured crust or filling is permitted. All soft pies must have a homemade crust for bottom. Top can be anything to garnish. Fruit pies must have top and bottom crust.
- Any soft pie containing eggs should be brought to the Home Economics Building on ice in a cooler. Building staff will leave pie in cooler until judging time.
- Fruit pies and soft pies will be judged separately. The first place fruit pie and the first place soft pie will compete for Best of Show.
- Judging is based on crust (10%), appearance (20%), filling (20%), and flavor/taste appeal (50%). The judges’ decision is final.
- All recipes entered become the property of the Missouri State Fair, who reserve the right to publish, promote or advertise recipes, names and photos without compensation.
- Youth division category is open to students age 16 and under, and includes fruit and soft pies. The winner of this category will not participate in the Best of Show judging. Youth division winner will receive a Missouri Grown gift basket.

To the top three exhibitors scoring the highest number of points in preservation, rosettes and prizes of first place: $12, second place: $10, and third place: $8, will be awarded. Exhibitor’s age must be on the entry blank.

Canned goods will be displayed in regulation jars with rings left on. Each entry must have a plain white label stating: product – specify name of canned food; date – month and year processed (all products must be less than 1 year since process date); method – specify either boiling water bath or pressure canned with pounds of pressure noted; and time processed – note the time in minutes. Please do not include your name on canning labels. Please refer to the general rules at the beginning of this department.
No food preservation items will be opened.
Preservation exhibits not picked up will not be returned.
Exhibits will be judged by University of Missouri Extension Centers Canning Guide available at county University Extension Centers.
Any sign of spoilage, unsealed jars or alteration from recommended procedures will be basis for disqualification.
Preservation Tips
- Fruits and Vegetables: Exhibited in pint or quart colorless glass jars with two-piece lids. Standard jelly jars where appropriate. No paraffin wax seals.
- Jars should be full; proper head space; liquid clear, free of sediment; food of uniform size or pieces. Color: Clear and fresh looking.
- Jellies: Clear, translucent, holds shape, tender, and free of crystals.
- Preserves: Fruit should be of natural color, transparent, plums and pieces of fruit should hold their shape. Syrup should be thick and clear, but not set.
- Marmalades: Contains pulp of fruit suspended throughout jellied juice. Color should be bright.
- Conserve: A combination of fruits in jellied juice. May contain raisins or nuts.
- Jams: Soft fruit and syrup of good bright color, thick and of good consistency.
