Fiddling Contest – Divisions: Open (any age), Senior (ages 60 and over), Junior (age 16 and under) and Other.
Amount offered in this section by State Fair………………………$3,500
Rules and Regulations
- Preliminary: Multiple divisions including Open (any age), Senior (60 and over), Junior (age 16 and under) and others. Seniors and Juniors may compete in the open division but may not then also compete in any other fiddling division.
- Each contestant will play 3 tunes: namely, a hoedown, a waltz and a tune-of-choice. All selections must be danceable in terms of meter, tempo and style.
- The Judges will not judge hokum, novelty, trick fiddling, or cross tuning.
- The number of rounds in each division and the number of contestants called back will be determined at contest time by the Superintendent. Close or tie scores may result in additional playoff rounds. Scoring between rounds is not cumulative.
- Top 3 from Open division will compete in Round Robin competition for State Championship title. Contestants will play up to 5 tunes (judges’ discretion) from categories/genres selected by random draw. Scores are cumulative.
- Prize money will be awarded along with plaques to the first place winners. Prize money will be awarded along with ribbons to other winners in the various divisions. Premium checks will be written as soon as possible after judging is completed. All checks will be mailed to premium winners, if a vendor input form has been completed by exhibitor. Vendor Input forms must be turned in to Missouri State Fair Business Office to ensure forms are received. Name on the form must match the name on the entry blank.
- When there is only one (1) exhibit in a class, the exhibitor will receive half of the premium money for the placing awarded by the judge.
- The Missouri State Fair does not guarantee premium money, merchandise, prizes or special awards. Because the State Fair Commission is without constitutional or statutory authority to borrow money for its operation, it reserves the right to prorate premium money because of state budget restraints.
- All contestants are responsible for their own fair admission fees. Contestants wishing to park closer than general admission parking may pick up one (1) complimentary parking tag for Lot R at the Visitor’s Hospitality Booth on South Highway 65, next to the Missouri Dept. of Conservation office building before entering Gate 11. These tags are not available at the gate. Any additional vehicles should park in general admission parking.
- The contest is open to all participants, including non-Missouri residents.
Top Accompanist
- The judges will award a cash prize to the fiddle accompanist determined to have provided the best backup during the fiddle contest.
- Qualifying instruments will be any traditional backup instrument (guitar, tenor guitar, banjo, bass, etc.)
